The Maine Grocers Association and the Maine Beverage Company have announced the 2011 Maine Grocers Association Scholarship recipients.

“The Maine Grocers Association’s Scholarship Program is a core program for our members. Their contributions coupled with that of the Maine Beverage Company’s outstanding generosity enable us to grant five $1,000 scholarships to these deserving students,” said MGA Board President Troy Plummer, of Plummer’s Supermarket in Buxton.

The local recipient is Cameron Huston of Washburn, who will be pursuing a career as a lawyer and has currently been accepted at the University of New England. Cameron is employed by Star City IGA.

The Maine Grocers Association is a state-wide business trade association, started in 1935, representing grocers, wholesalers and distributors in Maine’s grocery industry. The MGA currently represents over 300 retail and associate members throughout the entire state.

Maine Beverage Company operates Maine’s wholesale liquor business through a 10-year contract with the state. Maine Beverage Company works directly with suppliers and retailers with an eye towards responsible consumption.

Europe vacation

Instead of lounging around for April vacation, students from Ashland District School and students from Washburn District High School took a trip to visit the countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

During their time abroad they were able to make new friends; a group from San Francisco, Calif., joined them when they arrived. It was an amazing experience that the students are still talking about where they were able to view Neuschwanstein Castle and the towns of Rothenburg, Oberammergau, Munich, Valduz and Lucerene.

In those towns and cities the many sights amazed them, especially the Swarowski Crystal World, the trip to the top of Mt. Pilatus in the Swiss Alps, and a very educational visit to Dachau, a concentration camp used in WWII. Many of the students had first-hand views of what life was like for the prisoners during the war.

On a lighter side, the students were also able to visit the BMW showroom and museum. They sat in new BMW models, on motorcycles and played with roaming robots and video gaming systems. In Lucerne, they were all able to see the Lucerne Lion, a monument to the fallen Swiss soldiers in the French Revolution. In all, everyone had a great time and they are looking forward to the next adventure!
