With the 64th Maine Potato Blossom Festival looming just around the corner, (July 9-17), the schedule of events promises something for everyone of all ages again this year.
Whether you enjoy just walking around checking out the food vendors, going to a pageant, participating in a footrace, jamming to the tunes of talented musicians, observing the Human Chess Game or signing up for a boat regatta, it’s a week packed full of activities that include of course — mashed potato wrestling. There is also a full schedule for children to par take in. Regardless of which event catches your eye, don’t miss the always amazing Potato Blossom Parade on Saturday, July 16.
Another event that is rapidly catching on during this annual festival is the Maine Agri-women Potato Cooking Contest. Focusing on promoting and brining attention to the importance of the potato in Aroostook County the contest offers local cooks a chance to showoff their culinary talents in six different categories.
The event to take place on Saturday, July 16, at the Fort Fairfield Elementary School cafeteria. Entrants are encouraged to bring their prepared potato dishes to the location 10 – 10:30 a.m. Judging will begin at 11 a.m.
Categories include: breads, casseroles, desserts, salads, soups and appetizers. Recipes must have fresh Maine potatoes as an ingredient and contestants must bring a copy of the complete recipe with the prepared dish. Contestants may cook a recipe for two categories.
Winners in each of the six category will be based on four qualities including appearance of each dish; texture; ease of preparation; and flavor.
The grand prize winner will receive $150. Prizes will also be awarded to the first and second place winners in each category.
