Nine ladies weighed in and nine attended the class. Winnie Desmond was the loser of the week, and Riva Hawkes was runner-up. Great job ladies!! The secretary and treasurer gave reports for the week.
The summer outing was held at the Brookside in Smyrna, Everyone enjoyed the meal. Jackie Pratt led the program for the week. Her topic was on an article called “Summer Fruits.” Meeting was interesting and informative.

Island Falls News
Chery (Sewall) Connelly and husband, Peter, have arrived from Missouri and are staying both at the Sewall home and their cottage on lower Mattawamkeag Lake. So far, the weather has cooperated and the days have been nice and sunny. Just right for camping and also, opening the cottage.
I also have heard that Marion and Don Burton, formerly of the area, have arrived for their yearly visit at their cottage on Mattawamkeag Lake. They live in California and really look forward to their visit here and to enjoy the Summerfest activities, including the alumni banquet, which will be next month. I have had lots of activity around my bird feeders lately and it has also attracted a flock of pigeons. Guess I will stop putting out so much birdseed and maybe those bigger birds will leave. Have lots of gold finch and purple finch that use my feeders and the larger birds keep them away.
While mowing have kept an eye open for skunk holes but not so many this year. Perhaps the skunk colony has moved on to so-called greener pastures. Sure hope so. Still see an occasional gray squirrel hanging from his toes from the tree branch to get at the birdseed. Still hoping the deer will return one day soon.
Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Another Sunday with a little sun and some overcast too! No floods, snowstorms, or other disasters, thank you Lord.
Carmen Chasse’s granddaughter, McKenzie, was driving in Crystal when a moose struck the car and did some damage. No injuries to people, another “thank you.” Our maintenance man, Mr. Tidd, has been on vacation and is due back any time now.
Jeff Thibodeau was in the office on Monday and returned the same day to Portland. He was meeting his parents, Martin and Muriel Thibodeau in Camden. They have been visiting in Rockport. We were all saddened by the death of Darcy Shaw, only 33, who died July 5. Several of the tenants attended her viewing at Bowers and the funeral on Friday morning. We shall miss you, Darcy. God bless and our sympathy is extended to family and friends.
Attended the 50th anniversary party in Hodgdon held at the Fire Station for Eldon and Ardella Bennett of Houlton (Elden was our maintenance man at one time at Ricker). The station was transformed with yellow balloons, signs and gold ribbon. On display were many items used in their wedding, a dress, guest book, napkins. It was a very festive affair and congratulations to the couple.
Most of us were all gasping after hearing the not guilty verdict in the Casey Anthony trial. You have to go along with the jury. Dewey DeWitt has been enjoying the companionship of his son from California. He was born in Presque Isle, he told me.
The magic of a smile you can keep and pass it on to others at the same time. A smile can erase sadness, alleviate loneliness and even cure a headache. A smile is a ray of sun, a show of love, a gift that comes right back to you. A blessing from above! Have a great week everyone, safe and happy.
Sherman Seniors gather
The Senior Citizens Club members of Sherman went to Smyrna Mills Brookside Restaurant on Wednesday, July 6, on their summer outing for lunch, instead of meeting at their usual location at Sherman’s gym.
We enjoyed the fine day and camaraderie with the group, as well as the varied culinary choices listed on the menu.
Our next scheduled meeting will be at the Sherman Gym on July 20. A potluck is planned.
Present were: Annie and Fred Atkinson, Donna Grass, Eva Perry, Esther Greenier, Bonita Staples, Mary Lawler, Frances Gorman and Linniea Perry.
Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, HOULTON
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its July 8 meeting. A good attendance was there with leader Denise Clark. Roll call was given and we had pledges and said the special poem. Betty Hemore was present after a long absence.
Melva Folsom took home the skinny dish. Janice Shaw was the loser of the week with Kay Grass as runner-up. Macarena was the exercise of the week. Our leader told us that the contest is going well and will come to an end at the last meeting in July. Her program pertained to meat and she advised everyone to eat low fat meat.
Our representative Janice will visit us on July 22. Please try to be present for that visit. We meet every Friday; weigh-in is at 8-8:45 a.m. and no weigh-in after that time to give the girls time to figure their sheets. Our meeting starts at 9 a.m. and usually ends an hour later.
If you want more information on the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653. Come enjoy, exercise, socialize and take off weight.
