Raffle proceeds to benefit refuge

LIMESTONE — Friends of the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge are currently selling tickets for their annual raffle, proceeds of which will go toward helping the Friends group implement refuge improvements and programs from building birdhouses and duck boxes to nurture the wildlife community to sponsoring crowd-drawing events like the annual Fishing Derby.

Raffle tickets will be drawn on Saturday, Oct. 15 in conjunction with a celebration of the refuge. Prizes include a variety of hand-crafted items, including:

• First Prize: Alfred Cowett of Lincoln is known for his intricate woodworking skills, and he built a dollhouse-sized miniature log cabin specifically for the raffle.

• Second Prize: Christina Kelly has crafted a home-made wall hanging for the raffle, featuring flora and fauna commonly viewed at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge.

•Third Prize: President of the friends group Betty Rinehart has crafted a wildlife blanket for the raffle.

Raffle items are on display at the ANWR visitors’ center, which is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are available from any member of the Friends group or by calling Eli Kretschmer at 488-5201.
