Championship weekend provided some exciting golf and an enjoyable social time at the Houlton Community Golf Course.
Jerry York added to his trophy chest as he defeated a very strong and talented youngster Porter Gervais. In the B Division, Bill Dwyer won over Marty Bouchard and in the C Division, Cole McLaughlin downed Vaughn Putnam.
Two perennial rivals met again in the Women’s division with LouAnn Dwyer defeating defending champion Linda Holmes, while Sarah Howland won over Lori Holmes in the B Division.
To the 2011 champions, our congratulations, and to the runners-up, you have nothing to be ashamed of, you played extremely well to reach the finals.
In the Saturday three-club tournament, York and Bouchard tied for low gross honors, but the real surprise was in the net scores as 11-year-old Drew Marino net of 31.5 topped his dad, Tony, in a close finish. So Drew, you have lost your privileges at home and must go to bed an hour earlier.
Also in the money were Aaron Peabody and Kerry Putnam.
The social part of the weekend was enjoyed by many and again, the clubhouse and cooperating weather provided a memorable weekend.
In Twilight League play the leaders are Mike Fleming/Steve Henderson; Zach Goodwin/Aaron Peabody and Ian Gervais/Porter Gervais in the three divisions, as they battle to finish as the top 16 continues.
For ladies’ play, the game was trick or treat (is it Halloween already?) Winners in the “A” division, first, Linda Holmes and second, Misty Marino. In the “B” Division, tie, first, Brittany Benn and Marion Collins; second, Pam Mailman. In the “C” Division, first, Mary Grant and second, tie, Ethel Mersereau and Betty Anderson.
It was my pleasure to play with two young rising stars as Houlton continues to groom good golfers — Chris Williams played extremely well as he and his dad edged Brent McGuire and me in Twilight League play — and Nick Chase showed some fine potential in the weekly Blitz game.
The County Open is nearly here so check with the Pro Shop for details.
A sad note was the flag at half-mast in respect for Bill Weber who passed away last week. He was a popular golfer who enjoyed the Houlton Community Golf Course.
