Rachel Driscoll, 12, center, was named The Cubby’s Hero of the Month for June. She was presented with a check for $50 from The Cubby co-owner Cindy Johnson, at right. The soon-to-be seventh-grader enjoyed her summer vacation, particularly camping at Trafton Lake with her family including, shown above, her mother, Marci, back row, and, from left, her sisters Emily, 9, and Hilary, 5.

While there are many reasons why the business named Rachel the hero of the month, it all came down to attitude.

“She has a really sweet demeanor and positive disposition,” said Cindy Johnson, co-owner of The Cubby.

But this young hero isn’t just sweet and optimistic — she’s appreciative to boot even with a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a type of blood cancer).

“When we go down to Bangor for her doctors appointments, she always thanks the nurses even when she has to get a shot,” said Rachel’s mother, Marci.

When asked why she thought she was chosen as a hero, Rachel had to pause for a while in thought.

“I try to have a good attitude,” she finally understated.

When the treatments took her hair, Rachel donned a cap for school and took it in stride; school’s important to the 12-year old, as she plans on becoming a veterinarian some day in order to help animals feel better.

At home she helps her family care for a dog, cat, turtle and three fish (her favorite animals are horses).

Rachel will be entering seventh grade this fall after an enjoyable summer vacation which include camping with her family at Trafton Lake.
