Alumni news
The Mapleton Alumni Association recently held its annual banquet in conjunction with Mapleton Daze. After a tasty catered meal at the Mapleton Elementary School, a brief meeting was conducted by Joye McPherson Buck. Gloria Wilcox took attendance and the Class of 1961, celebrating its 50th year, was declared the class with most graduates present. Reports were given by Katie Buck on the annual Dow/Buck Memorial Walk and Linda Hubbard, of the scholarship committee, reporting that eight students in the tri-town area were each a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship.
After an enjoyable program of dancing, mirth and general all around good fun by the class of 1961, Floyd Higgins presented the Class of 1954 Annual Community Service Award to Dan Ladner. Yes, folks, The County can claim him as one of theirs, but Mapleton had him first!!! The evening closed with a rousing piano duet by Floyd and Dan followed by everyone joining in on “God Bless America.”

MAPLETON LIONS CLUB member Wes Buck, left, presents Mike King with the deluxe professional grill after his ticket was selected during the Club’s spring fundraiser. The Club would like to thank all those who purchased tickets to support this fundraiser.
The Lions Club auction in May was very successful. Given the tough economic times, the donations received and sales of the services and products at the auction were exceptional. Later in June the Mapleton Lions Club chicken barbecue at Mapleton Daze was well attended where our chicken dinners were nearly completely sold out. Then at the Maple Meadow Farm Festival, grilled sandwiches with the club special — Italian sausage sandwiches — were a hit with festival attendees. We thank everyone for your support. Also we congratulate Mike King on winning the professional gas grill the club raffled over the spring.
Finally, be looking forward to the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest as your favorite Italian Sausage sandwich chefs will be there Aug. 26-27 selling the Club’s famous sandwiches! Club members look forward to seeing everyone at the balloon festival. Come hungry; our sandwiches will satisfy your evening appetite!
Luncheon reminder
Just a reminder that this Friday, Aug. 5, the Mapleton Methodist Church will be hosting its monthly luncheon. All are invited to stop by and enjoy a great home-cooked meal and dessert! The community sincerely thanks those who faithfully volunteer their time, energy, and cooking skills to provide this wonderful ministry to our area!
Museum open
The Haystack Historical Society Museum is now open for visitors Saturdays through Aug. 27. Doors are open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. On every Saturday that the museum is open, there will be a yard sale in the East wing. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the one-room schoolhouse, agricultural artifacts, clothing, furniture, and Girl Scout uniforms and handbooks all from decades ago. There is also information about the lynching of Jim Cullen. New this summer is a display of artwork by SAD 1 students. There is no charge to visit the museum, so stop by this Saturday! Please keep in mind the Historical Society meets the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Museum. Members and guests are always welcome. Are you interested in becoming a working member?
