Island Falls 5K Run, 4K walk results; pie auction raises $1,000

Another great August Saturday morning greeted the nearly 100 participants in the 19th annual Island Falls Summerfest 5K run/4K walk (the ‘pie” run as it has become known!). All winners receive their choice of homemade pies or other delectable desserts.
The top three male finishers were Shawn Berry, Thomas Beckum and Alfred Hanscom in times of 16:44; 17:06 and 18:33 respectively.
The female top three were Marie Beckum, 20:44; Lauren Hodge, 21:26 and Nicole Green 21:53.
The top three walkers overall were Heather Newman, Allen Schenk and Gail Davis.
In the half-mile Fun Run for ages 9 and under, the winners were Colin MacKinnon and Teagan Ewings.
The top four finishers in the run were all from Caribou and seven of the first 11 came from Caribou … pretty good domination by that crowd, noted race organizer John Walker.
Other winners in their age groups were as follows: 14 and under, Parker Walker and Emily Hamlin in times of 23:39 and 25:44;  age 15-19, Trevor Levesque and Lauren Hodge in times of 20:45 and 21:26;  age 20-29, Kevin Dubois and Green with identical times of 21:53; age 30-39, Beckum and Jennifer Walker, in 17:06 and 27:31, respectively; age 40-49, the husband and wife duo of Joe and Angela Ewings crossed the line in 19:52 and 21:59 respectively; age 50-59, Leo Kashian and Kimberly Wright in times of 18:59 and 22:45 and age 60-69, the winners were Alan Chamberlain and Ruth Hare with times of 25:18 and 42:10.
In the walking division, the age winners were 14 and under, Kaitlyn Ring and Paige MacKinnon (tie) in 25:38 and William Prescott in 26:36. In the 15-19 age group the winner was Alesia Long in 32:09.  Skipping to the 30-39 group, the winners were Jennifer Curry and Christopher Michaud in 29:52 and 30:16 respectively. In 40-49 the winner was Sherry Long with a time of 32:09. In the 50-59 age bracket, the top finishers were Richard Lane and Ursula Greenlaw in times of 27:45 and 29:39 respectively. In the 60-69 group were Island Falls classmates, Gail Davis and Gary Springer with times of 25:19 and 28:46. The lone winner in the 70-plus group was Beverly Long in 36:04.
Following the race there was a pie/dessert auction. In all, the event netted over $1,000 for the charities of the Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
“Many thanks to all the participants in the races and in the auction, and to all the folks who made pies/desserts,” said Walker. “Without all of you this annual race would not be the success it is. Also, thanks to the many volunteers who helped immensely both on race day and prior, and to the many businesses who donated over $1,000 in gifts and certificates for door prizes.”
Mark your calendars now for the 20th annual ‘Pie Run’ to be held on the first Saturday in August (as always), which will be the 4th in 2012!
Let’s plan on making this one the biggest ever.
