Kicking Bear Camp a treat

Special to the Star-Herald

Kicking Bear 2011 took place at Smoldering Lake Outfitters in Bridgewater on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9.

This youth ministry works to help area youth develop the relationships, goals and skills they need to become contributing members of society. While the organization is targeted at underprivileged and at-risk youth age 5-15, it is open to any area youth to attend. This year’s events saw 100 kids and 75 adults on hand for the activities.

Friday night saw hay rides, cookouts, camping, fireside stories and all sorts of games, including a giant marshmallow fight! Those that wanted to stayed the night in their own tents and sleeping bags before rising on Saturday for a full day of events.

On Saturday, the kids enjoyed many events, including a shooting course where they walked to various stations to shoot a bow and arrow at 3D targets. Following lunch, they listened to motivational speaker and founder of Kicking Bear Foundation Ray Howell. Ray is an accomplished bow hunter with a worldwide reputation, but the prize that Ray holds deepest in his heart is every moment he spends with kids doing the Lord’s work at his camps. Kicking Bear One-On-One Youth Ministry uses campouts and archery shoots as a way to introduce youth to Christ, the outdoors and the sport of archery.
