The Caribou Cares About Kids Celebration, held Aug. 11-14, once again proved that when there is something going on in the city — most everyone shows their support.

Got milk? The staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou  helped to remind everyone of the need to include milk as part of a healthy diet. Regardless of the rainy weather, the group walked/rode the parade route from the Skyway Plaza to the Court house, participating in the annual Caribou Cares About Kids Parade, complete with milk moustaches.

Whether it was face painting, clowns, a ton of food (including snow cones, ice cream, burgers, hotdogs, strawberry shortcakes and barbecued chicken) canoeing/kayaking in the community pool, catching a ride on a miniature horse; testing your leg strength on a pedal-powered go-cart course; learning the art of Zumba dancing; learning about rabbits; seeing how long you could keep a hula hoop whirling or witnessing the true meaning of Caribou spirit as hundreds of people participated in the Caribou Cares About Kids Parade — during a steady rain — there was literally something for everyone during these four days and the crowds at each event was impressive.

We are all guilty of at some point stating, “I wish there was something different to do,” but thanks to local organizations, businesses, individuals, the Caribou Chamber of  Commerce and staff members from a variety of city departments, this annual event provides a positive solution to that statement.

The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department made sure that kids had a chance to try their skills at canoeing and kayaking in a secure environment — the Caribou Community Swimming Pool. The event was part of the recent Caribou Cares About Kids Celebration which provided four days of acitivities.

It didn’t take long for the wonderful aroma of barbecued chicken to fill the city as members of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church held their annual event. Along with 320 chicken halves, cooked to perfection in a very special sauce, diners also enjoyed rolls, salads and of course dessert.

Celebrating its 100th birthday, the Caribou Public Library joined in the ranks of the Caribou Cares About Kids Parade, helping to celebrate not only the library’s milestone event but the young readers throughout the community.
