As summer wanes, a sprint to the finish will provide some exciting golf moments at Houlton Community Golf Course.
This weekend, high handicaps will vie against the course for the coveted President’s Cup with 18-hole medal play. Why they call it the President’s Cup, and most clubs do, I don’t know, but I’m sure Barack Obama will not present the trophy. Which reminds me of what Babe Ruth said as he was negotiating a new contract. He was asked why he demanded more money than then-President Hoover, he replied, “I had a better year than he did.”
Forty members have signed up for Saturday play, which includes winners for men, women and juniors (under age 17). Tee times and pairings will be available today.
Mens’ Twilight League playoffs are under way with seven teams still alive: Mike Fleming/Steve Henderson; Zach Goodwin/Aaron Peabody; Jerry York/Bob Gray; Marty Bouchard/Mike Fogarty; Porter Gervais/Ian Gervais; Nick Skehan/P.J. Madore and Gabe Goodwin/Dan Peabody.
In Ladies’ Twilight League play, the short game was featured and Lois Fenlason showed her chipping and putting skills by finishing first. Lori Holmes was second, followed by Pam Mailman and tied for fourth, Mary Hatfield and Mary Grant.
A reminder to line up your guest for the Labor Day weekend Babe Caron Member-Guest Tournament. This two-day event with the attendant social activities is one of the season’s highlights.
Last Saturday, I noticed a young couple taking pictures around the course. When I found out they were to be married later in the day and would hold their reception and wedding dinner at the clubhouse, I could only think of the wonderful memories they will have of their special day and how the Houlton Community Golf Course clubhouse added to their joy.
Incidently, even though the clubhouse is a great spot, it does need some overhauling. Maybe billionaires Warren Buffet or Bill Gates will donate the funds. We can dream can’t we?
