Homecoming weekend for UMPI athletics
UMPI golfers win EMCC tourney
The University of Maine at Presque Isle golf team took first place in a tourney hosted by Eastern Maine Community College and held at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono Saturday.
The Owls won their fourth invitational tournament of the fall with a season-low 316 strokes. UM-Machias was the runner-up with 332 and the host Eagles were third with 375. UM-Augusta and NMCC also participated.
Reynold Brown of Essex, Conn. took medalist honors for the fourth time this season with a five-over-par 77. Owl teammates Mike Balmer of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and DJ Conley of South Portland came in with 79s, which tied them for third place.
Other UMPI golfers and their scores were A.J. Harris of Lee, 81; Anthony Batchelder of West Enfield, 83; and Eric Brown of Caribou, 90.
On Sunday, the Owls participate in a team scramble held at Waterville Country Club and hosted by Colby College. The Owls, with a score of 131, tied for second place with Bates, with host Colby winning with 121 strokes.
The UMPI team made up of Reynold Brown, Balmer and Harris had a score of 63, while the trio of Conley, Eric Brown and Batchelder carded a 68.
The Owls will next compete in the UM-Machias Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Barring View Country Club in Jonesboro.
Owl runners compete in Codfish Bowl event
Twenty six men’s and 23 women’s teams competed in the annual Codfish Bowl Cross Country Race held at Franklin Park in Boston Saturday. The University of Maine at Presque Isle made the trip, with veteran runners Justin Fereshetian and Kati Christoffel leading the way for the Owls.
Fereshetian took the 83rd position with a time of 29:11 on the eight-kilometer course. Teammates behind him were Daniel Dermody (123rd, 31:34), Philip Boody (132nd, 32:03), Andrew Nesbitt (144th, 33:16), Jaron Gray (170th, 42:45) and Richard Landry (171st, 44:15).
Bates was the team champion and Boston University’s Rich Peters took individual honors with a 25:11 clocking. UMPI finished 25th out of 26 teams.
In the women’s 5K race, Christoffel was 119th with a time of 23:27. Teammate Carly Langley was 17 seconds behind Christoffel and in 123rd position, while Emily Wright (136th, 24:59), Molly Lindsey (140th, 25:39) and Sarah Taylor (152nd, 28:52) also competed.
The team champion was BU, while independent runner Katie Matthews posted the winning time of 17:38. UMPI was last in the 23-team field.
Next is the Pop Crowell Invitational, to be held in Wenham, Mass. Saturday, Oct. 1. Gordon College is the host school.
Owl teams lose home contests to UM-Fort Kent
The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s soccer teams were swept in Homecoming matches played Saturday at Park Family Field on the UMPI campus.
The Owl men trailed by a mere goal (2-1) at intermission before the Bengals score eight more times in the second half for the 10-2 victory.
Jermaine West had a hat trick, while Kenrick McLeod and Kennard Brown notched two goals each for the winners, who improved to 7-0-1 with the win.
The Owls’ Germaine Chambers scored off a Will Cole assist 38:49 into the first half to draw the hosts to within a goal, while Craig Maffei headed in Lucas Bartlett’s free kick in the game’s 49th minute to make it 3-2 in favor of the Bengals. UM-Fort Kent then scored seven unanswered goals to finish the match.
David Girouard was the winning goalkeeper and finished with three saves on eight shots for the Bengals. UMPI’s Richard Felbaum recorded 11 saves on 32 shots.
The Owls fell to 2-5 on the campaign.
The UMFK women also improved to 7-0-1 with a 6-1 victory Saturday. Donike Ferriera notched four goals and Whitney Sinclair the other two for the Bengals, who led 2-0 at intermission.
Carolynn Tuck of UMPI scored a goal in the 80th minute to break the shutout bid.
Sydney Proctor had two saves on six shots in goal for UMFK, while UMPI’s Taylor Ussery made 10 saves on 39 shots. The Owls are now 3-4 overall.
Both UMPI teams make the trip to Canton, N.Y. for matches Friday and Saturday against SUNY-Canton. Friday’s matches are at 5 and 7 p.m. and Saturdays are at 1 and 3 p.m.
