An accident during the Pumpkin Festival Parade in Newcastle claimed the life of Marvin Tarbox Jr., 59, a member of the Bangor-based Anah Temple Shriners.
Tarbox, of Hancock, reportedly was leading several Shriners driving go karts up and over a GMC Suburban. As he made his way over the vehicle, the track collapsed, causing Tarbox’s vehicle to fall to the road. Other Shriners following behind were not aware of the accident and, unable to stop, at least two drivers subsequently struck Tarbox.
Tarbox was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, where he died from injuries sustained in the accident.
A former resident of Washburn, Tarbox was employed as an equipment installer for FairPoint Communications at the time of his death.
Joe Kitchen, president of the Hancock County Shrine Club who worked with Tarbox, told the Bangor Daily News he’d known Tarbox for nearly 30 years.
“Marvin was a real nice man, a very well-liked Shriner. We are all kind of devastated over it,” Kitchen told the Bangor paper.
