A very sweet fundraiser

Seven-year old Chloe Sleeper of Caribou, “just wanted to do a nice thing to really help the hospital and the people who are sick.” So the Hilltop Elementary School student enlisted the help of her Mom, Tanya Sleeper, and together they baked homemade butterscotch and chocolate chip cookies for Chloe to sell to raise money to do just that — help people.

“It just popped into my head and I thought it would be a nice thing to do,” Chloe explained when asked how she got the idea. “My friend’s Mom was really sick and I just wanted to help somehow.”

On a Saturday afternoon in late September, all on her own, Chloe made some signs, decorated a table and sold her freshly baked cookies and lemonade at Sleeper’s, her Dad’s store.  Chloe didn’t even need to price her treats, as her generosity was matched only by the good will and support she received from her customers who bought cookies and enjoyed the lemonade.

In just a short time, Chloe had sold all of her inventory, 42 cookies in all, making $91, which she donated to the Jefferson Cary Foundation at Cary Medical Center. Chloe’s donation makes her the youngest Foundation donor to contribute to the hospital’s planned new Mammography Suite.

“Chloe’s cookie sale project was a really grownup thing to do and I’m so proud of her,” commented Kris Doody, R.N., Cary CEO. “She is a wonderful example of how caring and compassion for our friends and neighbors affects us all, and that we can all make a difference if we put our minds to it,” she added
