Fatal car accident in Bancroft

    BANCROFT — Maine State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday morning on the Bancroft Road in Bancroft.
    According to Sgt. Tom Pelletier, Wilfred Hannington, 56, of Bancroft was westbound in a 2003 Dodge pickup on the Bancroft Road in the early morning hours Thursday when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, struck a ditch and rolled over.
    Hannington was partially ejected from the vehicle and received serious head trauma. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Pelletier said.
    At approximately 7 a.m., the crash was discovered by a passing motorist and reported to the State Police. Danforth Fire and Rescue units and Down East EMS ambulance service responded. Hannington was pronounced dead at the scene.
    Harvey Hannington of Danforth owned the vehicle. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and is considered a total loss. The accident remains under investigation by troopers Dave Coflesky, Timmy Saucier and Pelletier.
