PRESQUE ISLE — Dan Bagley, of Presque Isle, has been appointed by the Board of Directors of the United Way of Aroostook to serve as chairperson for the 2011 United Way fund-raising campaign.
Bagley, manager of the Presque Isle branch of the County Federal Credit Union, has his work cut out for him as the non-profit organization hopes to raise nearly $500,000 in the coming year.
“Dan is very well known throughout Aroostook County because of his involvement with numerous organizations and the positive impact that he has had on those organizations. The United Way Board set this year’s campaign goal at $470,000,” said Claudia Stevens, executive director of the UWA.
“In accepting this challenging appointment, Bagley said, “I am honored that the Board of Directors of United Way asked me to chair their annual fund drive. It’s a good feeling to be affiliated with an organization where 99.6 percent of the money raised stays in the County. I am looking forward to this campaign year and to the support of the people of Aroostook as we work together to achieve our goal.”
The campaign officially got under way at the northern tip of the County.
The campaign’s first official kick-off event was on Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. This was an opportunity for people to hear of the generous, worthwhile and exciting work being done by the United Way of Aroostook in the St. John Valley and find out how they could become part of it and help give back to their community, Stevens said.
The campaign moved south the following day, with an event planned in Presque Isle.
A second event took place on Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Campus Center. Everyone was welcome to attend this event and learn more about United Way and the work that we’re doing in your community, said Stevens.
So much of what the UWA is able to do each year depends on volunteer efforts.
“At the heart of our United Way are the volunteers and donors who make the commitment to respond to the needs of their neighbors. United Way of Aroostook has served as a lifeline for those County people who struggle every day. Our goal is to strengthen children and families, support seniors, meet basic needs and promote self-sufficiency. When you make a gift to United Way of Aroostook, you invest in a network of vital services and powerful solutions that help to achieve our goals,” Stevens said.
