Mars Hill Rotary Club receives LIHEAP update

MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Nov. 8 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Susan Deschene of the Aroostook County Action Program. She oversees the Community Services Programs for ACAP. Susan spoke about LIHEAP, the low income home energy assistance program.

The program serves many families and individuals throughout The County, with at-risk families with children under age 2 and those over age 60 looked at first. Last year, there were 7,500 applications received, with 7,000 qualifying for the program. The average benefit received last year was $866.

Due to the federal guidelines having changed for this year, they expect that more than 1,000 households won’t qualify for the program this year. Due also to the fact that Maine has received only 40 percent of the funds as last year, they also expect that this year’s benefit will be much less than last year’s.

With four offices in The County — Presque Isle, Caribou, Houlton and Fort Kent and 15 outreach sites — families and individuals can apply through April for assistance.

THERE WERE COSTUMES all over Mars Hill on Halloween this year. Spotted, or should I say “striped,” working at the Mars Hill IGA was a very pretty “stinker.” Heather Murphy was all decked out for the day as she worked her shift at the store. GRAYSON McKENNEY tried his hand at being a gangster at this year’s Halloween Party, which featured games and candy for kids. COUSINS Hanna “Chicken” Bradstreet, 7 months old, and Connor “Dracula” Corey, 6 months old, were very taken with each other at the Halloween Party at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center this Halloween.
