FORT FAIRFIELD — Police are trying to determine what occurred during the early morning hours of Nov. 19 that resulted in a local woman sustaining a gunshot wound that later required surgery.
“At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Fort Fairfield Police responded to a Bower Street resident for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and found 48-year-old Robin Belanger who had been shot once in the abdomen by her husband, David Belanger, with a small-caliber weapon,” said Chief Bill Campbell, FFPD.
Police believe the shooting was an accident.
“At this time, the shooting appears to be accidental. Mrs. Belanger was transported to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle by ambulance, where she underwent surgery. Her injury, according to health care professionals, was not considered to be life-threatening,” said Campbell.
Detectives with the Maine State Police are assisting the FFPD with the case which remains under investigation.
