ROTARY DONATES TO HOMELESS

At its Nov. 9 meeting, the Fort Fairfield Rotary Club presented Homeless Services of Aroostook’s Executive Director Steve Eyler a check for $250 representing supplemental incomes from the club’s recent Travel Draw event. Additionally, there were personal donations from club members and friends, plus collected food and household items.

Eyler attended the meeting and updated the club concerning operations, support demographics and misconceptions relating to those who receive support. He noted that the shelter is the only emergency homeless shelter in Aroostook County and can house up to 30 families and individuals in a safe, drug- and alcohol-free facility. Many receiving support include disadvantaged families with children who are experiencing financial difficulty such as losing a job or a health issue that causes a job/home loss. Some statistics provided include: every year over 435 individuals and family members stay at the shelter, over one-quarter of the individuals are children, over 91 percent are Mainers, over 78 percent are native to The County, almost half fall into the 18-30 year-old age bracket, and 68 percent are male. More information may be obtained by calling the shelter at 764-5114 or 764-4125. Picture are Steve Eyler and Janet Kelle, Fort Fairfield Rotary Club president.
