PLAYER OF THE YEAR — UMPI women’s soccer student-athlete Lainey Herring of Houlton makes a move in a match earlier this fall.
Herring, who also made the first team, led the Owls with 14 goals in 2011, three of which were game-winners. UMPI’s women’s soccer team finished the season 10-4 and narrowly missed entry into the eight-team USCAA National Championship Tournament.
Herring was not the only Owl receiving AD3I recognition. Joining her on the first team was midfielder Susan Lavertu of Madawaska. Lavertu had nine points on the season.
Owl Elizabeth Keagan of Amherst, Nova Scotia made the second team. Keagan was recognized largely for her defensive work on the pitch.
From the men’s team Craig Maffei of Readfield was named the association’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Maffei also made the first team, joining teammate Kyle Corrigan of Caribou and goalkeeper Richard Felbaum of Saco. Corrigan scored four goals and earned 13 points this past season to tie for the team lead. Felbaum made six starts, had 32 saves and one shutout.
The Association of Division III Independents consists of 11 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes.
