HOULTON — A registered sex offender and a man with bath salts were among two arrests recently made by the Houlton Police Department.
On Sunday, Nov. 27, Shayne Ellis, 30, of Bangor was arrested for trafficking in prison contraband during his booking at the Aroostook County Jail on an unrelated arrest in Caribou.
According to Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin, Ellis was being transported to the Aroostook County Jail from the Caribou area at 7:17 p.m.
“While being processed at the jail, corrections officers discovered a packet of white powder on him that was determined to be bath salts,” Asselin said.
The following day, Houlton police arrested a 50-year-old Houlton man for failing to comply with the Sex Offender Registry Act.
According to Patrolman Erica Pelletier, Leroy Marshall Smith of Houlton was arrested at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28 in the High Street area for failing to report his place of residence. She said it was the second time he had failed to report where he was living to the proper authorities.
Pelletier said Smith was also wanted in Oregon for a similar offense, but Oregon was not willing to extradite him.
