Jon McLaughlin, executive director of the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation, announced Monday a collaborative naming contest for the pending “Welcome to Houlton” sign.
McLaughlin explained that a vendor has been chosen for the lighted Welcome to Houlton sign that will be erected on Dunn Furniture Company property and that the sign committee has chosen a final design.
The welcome portion of the sign will include a graphic outline of the State of Maine with a large star locating Houlton. The sign will be earthy in tones with a cream colored background with a light green Maine graphic and superimposed over the map face is the Welcome dialog in burgundy lettering.
The lettering will say “Welcome to Houlton, Maine…” with a tag line after the dots.
Collaborating with the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce officials and Houlton High School administration, SADC held a naming contest for the tag line with Chamber members and students at HHS. SADC received numerous submissions for the contest that ended Nov. 30.
The many tag lines are being reviewed by the SADC sign committee and an unveiling of the sign design with the winning tag line will be held at a press conference Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Houlton Town Council Chambers at 1 p.m. The winner will receive a check for $50. Groundbreaking for the concrete base for the sign will begin as soon as possible in the spring.
