PRESQUE ISLE — Local law enforcement officers will be out in force in the next week, thanks to a grant that will allow added patrols to watch for drunk drivers.
“We received a grant as part of the Holiday High Visibility Enforcement program. The grant will make it possible for members of the Presque Isle Police Department to conduct several traffic details targeting OUI specifically,” said Deputy Chief Laurie Kelly, PIPD.
Officers from the PIPD will join police across the country in looking for people operating under the influence. Christmas and New Year’s are typically known for holiday parties where participants often enjoy drinking. Kelly said the funds will be used to ensure everyone gets home safely, whether they’ve been partying or not.
“This is a nationwide campaign over the holidays. Our grant period will end Jan. 2, 2012,” said Kelly.
In addition to the details, officers will also be conducting a roadblock to check motorists.
“Along with several various patrol details, we will be conducting an OUI roadblock on Route 1 in Presque Isle on Dec. 22,” said Kelly.
