Washburn girls off to strong start this season

The defending state champion Washburn Lady Beavers are out to hot start posting their second win of the season while showing a tough defense to go along with a slick offense and the Presque Isle Lady Wildcats are proving to be strong contender in Class B.

Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Dec. 19.

Limestone/MSSM 45, Madawaska 34 — The LCS/MSSM Tigers evened their record at 2-2 Monday night with a home win over Madawsaka, 45-34.

Stephanie Leighton paced Limestone with 13 points, while Mallory Patten added 12 points and Daniele Pelkey scored 10.

Kelly Dugal paced 1-3 Madawaska with 12 points.

Southern Aroostook 69, Ashland 42 — At Ashland Monday, Sable Altavater led a balanced attack with 15 points as Southern Aroostook beat Ashland, 69-42.

The 1-3 Warriors held a 29-19 halftime lead, then outscored 1-3 Ashland, 28-10, in the third quarter to take command.

Olivia Raymond added 12 points for Southern Aroostook, while Kristen Tarr and Kaitlyn Sommers each scored 11 points and Mataya Hartin had 10.

Kayla Cote scored a game-high 21 points for Ashland, while Marissa Chasse scored 11 points.

Presque Isle 58, Old Town 23 — At Old Town, the Wildcats used a balanced scoring attack to improve to 2-0.

Hannah Graham netted 11 points for the winners and Krystal Kingsbury added 10. Chandler Guerrette chipped in with eight points.

Tori Hildreth and Kelsey Hesseltine each scored four points for 1-3 Old Town.

Fort Kent 45, Central Aroostook 41 — Fort Kent’s Sam Carapellucci scored 18 points and Michela Desjardins added 11 as the Warriors held off the Panthers in Mars Hill on Saturday.

Brittany Theriault added eight points for 3-0 Fort Kent.

Victoria McIntyre topped 2-1 Central Aroostook with 16 points, and Rachel Grew hit five 3-pointers for 15 points.

Hermon 51, Caribou 33 — In Hermon on Saturday, Alexa Massey pumped in 18 points for Caribou, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks defeated the Vikings, 51-33.

Raychel Alley had a game-high 20 points for 2-1 Hermon.

Caribou falls to 0-3.

Washburn 80, Southern Aroostook 40 — The Washburn Beavers continue to put up impressive numbers. On Thursday in Dyer Brook Washburn doubled up Southern Aroostook, 80-40.

Freshman Mackenzie Worcester scored a game-high 33 points for the Beavers. Carmen Bragg added 19 points for 2-0 Washburn and Joan Overman added eight.

Sable Altavater tossed in 18 points for 0-3 Southern Aroostook. Jess Tucker added seven.

LCS/MSSM 42, Hodgdon 39 — At Hodgdon Thursday, the Limestone Community School/MSSM girls picked up their first win of the year downing Hodgdon by three points.

Daniele Pelkey paced the 1-2 winners with 14 points and Amanda Allen added eight.

Mariah Wiley scored 15 points to lead 1-1 Hodgdon and Lacey McQuarrie added nine.

Central Aroostook 43, Madawaska 26 — The Central Aroostook Panthers went to 2-0 on the young season by dropping the Madawaska Owls, 43-26, on Wednesday.

The Panthers clamped down on defense late in the game and outscored the Owls, 15-3, in the fourth quarter.

Vicki McIntyre led the Panthers (2-0) with 21 points and seven rebounds, and Rachael Grew posted nine points.

Nicole Cyr paced the 1-1 Owls with nine points.

Easton 48, Limestone 45 — At Limestone Wednesday, Carla Halvorson connected for 20 points as the Bears edged the Eagles. Mariah Cyr chipped in 10 points for 2-1 Easton.

Mallory Patton led Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics with 16 points. Daniele Pelkey added eight.

Van Buren 68, Ashland 36 — At Van Buren Wednesday, Parise Rossignol connected for 29 points to lead the Crusaders to victory over the Hornets. Ashlie Wilson added 10 points for 3-0 Van Buren.

Kayla Cote topped Ashland (1-1) with 13 points.

Fort Kent 42, Caribou 31 — At Caribou Dec. 13, The Caribou Vikings played the Fort Kent Warriors tough for the first half, but the second half belonged to Fort Kent. The Warriors outscored the Vikings, 25-11, in the second half to record the victory, 42-31.

Sam Carapellucci paced 2-0 Fort Kent with 19 points and Michela Desjardins added 12, including three 3-pointers.

Alexa Massey scored 13 points to lead 0-2 Caribou and Rebecca McDougal added nine.
