Washburn falls from the ranks of the unbeaten after loss to VB

The Presque Isle Wildcats are the only remaining undefeated schoolgirl basketball team in the region after Washburn dropped a contest to Van Buren last week.

Presque Isle remains in first-place in Eastern Maine Class B, but the Gardiner Tigers are a close second with a 10-2 record.

Washburn is still at the top of the Class D standings, but Van Buren is a close second followed by Central Aroostook and Fort Fairfield.

Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 16:

Presque Isle 69, Old Town 43 — At Presque Isle Monday, the unbeaten Wildcats jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead en route to the victory.

Meredith Stewart paced 10-0 Presque Isle with 12 points while Chandler Guerrette added 11 and Megan Ireland scored 11.

Ashley Abbott scored 12 points to lead 6-5 Old Town.

Central Aroostook 56, Southern Aroostook 33 — The Central Aroostook Panthers raced out to a big first-quarter lead at home against Southern Aroostook and never looked back, beating the Warriors 56-33.

Victoria McIntyre scored 16 points, including a 6-of-7 effort from the free-throw line, and grabbed six rebounds in the win. Kayla Cushman added 15 points for the 9-2 Panthers.

Mataya Hartin had eight points for 5-6 Southern Aroostook.

John Bapst 41, Caribou 34 — At Caribou Monday, the Crusaders took a 21-15 halftime lead en route to the victory over the Vikings.

Paige Martin paced 5-6 John Bapst with 12 points.

Alexa Massey scored 11 points to lead 2-11 Caribou.

Easton 78, East Grand 18 — At Easton Monday, Mindy Desmond scored 20 points and Carla Halvorson added 14 to lead the Bears past the Vikings. Kylee Carter added 12 points for 7-5 Easton.

Shaunna Beaudoin scored six points to lead 1-9 East Grand.

Caribou 42, Foxcroft Academy 30 — At Dover-Foxcroft Saturday, Katelynn Tardie tossed in 13 points to lead the Vikings to their second victory.

Caribou is now 2-10 and Foxcroft is 4-6.

Van Buren 66, Washburn 56 — The schoolgirl game of the week was in Van Buren Friday night. The undefeated Washburn Beavers took on the Crusaders and Van Buren was able to hand Washburn their first loss of the season.

Parise Rossignol scored a game-high 33 points, including a 13-for-15 effort from the foul line, and contributed 10 rebounds and nine assists to spark the Crusaders to the win. Felisha Bouchard posted 18 points and nine rebounds for 9-2 Van Buren.

Mackenzie Worcester tossed in 27 points to pace 10-1 Washburn.

Central Aroostook 50, Hodgdon 45 — At Mars Hill Friday, Victoria McIntyre scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to propel the Panthers past the Hawks.

Kalya Cushman added 14 points for the 8-2 Panthers.

Mariah Wiley hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead Hodgdon.

Fort Fairfield 49, Easton 43 — The Fort Fairfield Tigers overcame a halftime deficit to beat the host Easton Bears on Thursday night.

Amanda Hotham scored 15 points and Sydney Churchill added nine as the Tigers rallied in the third quarter to defeat the Bears. Nicole Giberson had eight points for Fort Fairfield (7-1).

For 6-5 Easton, Carla Halvorson scored 17 points and made five steals while Kylee Carter had nine points and Ariana Babineau grabbed 11 rebounds.

Fort Kent 42, Caribou 37 — At Fort Kent, Sam Carapellucci scored a game-high 21 points to power the Warriors past the Vikings.

Laura Doak added nine points for 7-5 Fort Kent.

Alexa Massey topped 1-10 Caribou with 12 points, and Annie Collins contributed 10.

Limestone/MSSM 50, Wisdom 26 — At St. Agatha Thursday, Melissa Cantafio scored 16 points to lead the Eagles to victory.

Danielle Pelkey chipped in with 12 points for the 5-6 winners and Alexis Bell put in eight

Ashley Beaulieu paced 2-8 Wisdom with 11 points.

Presque Isle 66, Caribou 29 — The host Caribou Vikings came out strong in the first seven minutes of the first quarter, but after that the Presque Isle Wildcats turned up the pressure and cruised to an easy win, 66-29, on Jan. 10.

Chandler Guerrette had a game-high 18 points to lead the undefeated Wildcats. Megan Ireland and Krystal Kingsbury both chipped in with nine points each for 9-0 Presque Isle.

For 1-9 Caribou, Alexa Massey scored 10 and Rebecca McDougal added nine points.

Washburn 72, Fort Kent 46 — At Washburn Jan. 10, MacKenzie Worcester  scored 36 points to help the Beavers top the Warriors and improve to 10-0.

Rayah Saucier added eight points for Washburn and Carmen Bragg dished out seven assists.

For 6-5 Fort Kent, Samantha Carapellucci led the way with 15 points. Brittany Theriault and Michela Desjardins each chipped in with eight.
