Cornerstone construction on track,
volunteers needed
To the editor:
The cold of a typical Aroostook County winter has not slowed the construction of the new classroom building being put up for Cornerstone Christian Academy at our new site south of Presque Isle along U.S. Route One. Groundbreaking was December 6th, and made possible by a large anonymous donation.
Over the past six weeks the foundation and footings have been poured, care being taken to protect the concrete from the cold until it had fully hardened. The walls have all gone up and the first roof trusses were fitted into place on Jan. 13th. Once the roof is up, the next project will be insulating the walls, which is significant because it will be the first major element of the project to be carried out by volunteers. It is hoped that eventually much of the inside work will be completed by volunteers.
Significant progress has been made in fundraising for the rest of the project since the large starter donation, and the school board is confident that the building will be ready for start of classes in August. Board Chair Andy Yaeger reports that the new building is something Cornerstone supporters have been working and praying toward over the last several years. Interim Principal Angela Wardwell is looking forward enthusiastically to moving in. She says the staff is very excited about having their own classrooms, and the students for all the outdoor space.
“Space of our own” is a popular theme now at Cornerstone, which has enjoyed a harmonious relationship with our current host, the Family Christian Center, for several years. Indeed, everyone is looking forward to being in a facility of our own.
Cornerstone is actively seeking volunteers to help with the construction. Those interested in participating, financially or physically, can view the Cornerstone website at cornerstoneme.com or call the school at 768-6222.
