Planet Head Day

Do you enjoy astrology? Are you fascinated by the planets of our solar system? Are you equally compassionate about helping others? Then you need to mark your calendar for the annual Planet Head Day celebration that will benefit Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.).

This event will take place Saturday, Feb. 18 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Weiden Auditorium on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus. If you have never attended this event in the past, please make plans to do so this year!

In addition to learning some astrology, attendees will also be given the opportunity to have their heads shaved or don a latex cap to have a planet painted on it! Some receive pledges prior to the head shaving, while others get shaved and make a donation while at the event. Several members of the surrounding communities have already committed to having their heads painted including Chris Wymer, Shawn Cunningham and Josh Archer, all of WAGM-TV. The news station has even created a link on their website for those wishing to make a donation to C.A.N.C.E.R. thru Paypal.

Refreshments will be on hand, including pizza from local Pizza Hut restaurants! Stop by, check out the fun and consider making a donation to this local non-profit group focused on assisting area cancer patients.

Have you ordered?

The annual cookie sale for Girl Scouts of Maine is in its final days! Phase one of the three-phase Cookie Sale will end Sunday, Jan. 29. Customers placing orders during that time can expect their cookies to arrive in Presque Isle March 3 for delivery sometime thereafter. Some local troops may participate in booth sales at various local business locations starting March 10, allowing customers to purchase cookies on site, without ordering.

Customers can select from their eight favorite flavors, as no new cookie will be introduced this year. (You may be hearing reports of a new lemon cookie, but that is not in Maine). The Girl Scouts of Maine Council chose to redesign the box of the popular Shortbread cookie as Girl Scouts commemorate their 100th year this year!

Several Scouts will be working very hard to sell cookies this year in order to assist them in earning a free week at Girl Scout camp this summer. Please support local Girl Scouts by placing an order. If you are unable to eat cookies for health reasons, please ask how you can place an order to benefit local charities or military troops.

LO-MAPLETON-DC1X-SH-04  KATELYN AMERO, Mapleton Junior Girl Scout, took on the challenge of earning the Girl Scouts of Maine Centennial Patch this year. This patch was created in celebration of the 100th year of Girl Scouting. In order to successfully earn the patch, Amero had to complete 100 acts of community service. She selected the Sister Mary O’Donnell Homeless Shelter as one recipient of her donations. With the help of her family, she collected 35 toiletry items for men, women and children, 10 office supply items for the shelter and transitional housing offices, and donated over 40 articles of men’s clothing that were collected from her family members. Pictured are, from left: Katelyn’s mother and Junior Girl Scout Leader Laurie Amero, Katelyn Amero and Steve Eyler, the executive director of the Shelter. At the time Amero dropped off her donations to the shelter, she also met Lisa Green, the property manager for the transitional housing program. Amero was given a tour of the shelter to see how her donations would help others.
