Caribou resident Milo Haney, speaking on behalf of the Citizens for Responsible City Management, addressed the Caribou City Council Monday evening, reading a letter in which the group requested the council compile and present to the group a complete list of all equipment from all the departments within the city.
“We feel that as citizens and taxpayers of this community, we have the right to know where our money is being spent,” Haney stated. “Therefore, we are asking that you provide us with the year, make and model of all the equipment each department is using and any equipment that is not being used at this time or may be in storage,” Haney continued.
The request also stated, “Also, as citizens and taxpayers of this community, we would like a complete list of how many people work in each department full-and-part time. We are asking that this information be given to us in a timely manner, preferable within two weeks.” The group further asked that the information be sent to Doug Morrell, chairperson of the Citizens for Responsible City Management.
“That is quite a request,” said Mayor Kenneth Murchison, “we will have to consider how best to respond.”
“Are you looking for lists that include everything from the city’s computers to highway department inventory?” asked Councilor Gary Aiken. “Actually, this would probably be a good thing (referring to the lists) for all councilors to have, especially the equipment list, so we can refer to it during our budget process.”
City Manager Buck stated that he would work with the council and department heads to compile the requested lists, including the total number of city employees.
