LIMESTONE — While many in the region stayed indoors during last weekend’s cold snap, residents of the Limestone area donned their mittens and as many layers as they could muster to brave the cold during the third annual Winter Fun Day.
“It was a chilly day, but a fabulous day for all who participated,” said Limestone Recreation Department Director Amanda Brooker.
She estimated that over 200 people attended the event, soaking up a bit of that winter sunshine and enjoying the seasonal activities, like skiing, showshoeing, snow sculpting and, a new addition to the event, dogsledding.
“We had a few less [participants] than last year, but considering the weather it was still a great turnout,” Brooker said.
As all the exciting outdoor activities came with single-digit temperatures, the Limestone Community School’s cafeteria was open for participants to warm up and enjoy a cup of chicken stew, cooked up by famed Limestone chef Carol Kelley for the Limestone Rotary Club’s fundraiser.

Members of the Rotary Club first started Winter Fun Day three years ago with the idea of getting the community involved with an outdoor winter event filled with fun, activity and socialization and their mission rang true as kids and kids-at-heart of all ages participated in everything from snowshoeing to sleddog rides, and brought together students from the Limestone Community School, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics and the Loring Job Corps Center.
The next can’t-miss activity in Limestone is the Lazer-Tag event on Saturday, Feb. 11. Additional information regarding the event can be found by visiting www.mssm.org.
