Fort Kent halts CAHS winning streak

Three one-loss teams are at the top of the Eastern Maine Class D boys Heal Point standings.

Central Aroostook is one, followed by Jonesport Beals and Washburn. Central Aroostook and Washburn will meet up for the first time this season on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Washburn, which should prove to be a great game and have a huge impact on who enters the tournament as the top seed.

Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 23:

Fort Kent 43, Central Aroostook 37 — For the second time this year the Fort Kent Warriors have knocked a Class D power from the ranks of the undefeated.

On Monday in Fort Kent the Warriors used a strong defensive effort to beat the Central Aroostook Panthers, 43-37.

Central Aroostook’s record is now 12-1. Earlier this year Fort Kent knocked off Washburn, which was undefeated at the time.

Tom Enerva scored 11 points and Curtis Bouchard netted nine for 9-4 Fort Kent, which outscored the visitors 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

Mike McClung led 12-1 Central Aroostook with 16 points.

Caribou 64, Ellsworth 59 — The Caribou Vikings got arguably their biggest win of the year on Saturday.

At home the Vikings downed Ellsworth by five points. Caribou got off to a fast start outscoring the Eagles, 26-9, in the first quarter.

“We weathered many runs by them throughout the game to hold onto the lead,” said Caribou coach Chris Casavant. “We felt like we played well the night before which carried over into Saturdays game.”

Casavant also added this is a game from which Caribou can build.

Dayne Savage scored 27 points to lead 7-7 Caribou. Matt Milliard chipped in with 14 points.

Ellsworth (9-4) was led by Nick Holt with 17 points. Thomas Sawyer and Steven Mahan added 12 points each.

MDI 63, Presque Isle 58 — Presque Isle’s struggles with teams from Hancock County continued. Earlier this year the Wildcats dropped away games to MDI and Ellsworth and this weekend those two teams frustrated Presque Isle at home.

On Saturday MDI dropped the Wildcats to 8-5 with a five-point win.

Benjamin Walls scored 17 points and Nicholas Shaw had 11 for unbeaten MDI (13-0).

Matt Eager scored a game-high 23 points for Presque Isle. Tyler Brooks added 22.

REID CLARK of Easton goes up for a shot against Washburn’s Chase Chandler. The game played last Friday was close early, but the Beavers played a strong last quarter to pull out the victory.

Washburn 74, Easton 49 — The “Barn” in Easton can be a tough place to play for visitors, but Washburn found their rhythm in the second half Friday night to down the Bears, 74-49.

“I thought that Easton handled our pressure defense better than I would have thought, which kept them in the game through about three quarters,” said Washburn coach Randy Norsworthy. “The final score of 74-49 really wasn’t indicative of the closeness of the contest.”

Jordan McLaughlin scored 25 points as Washburn improved its record to 10-1. Mitch Worcester added 16 points for the Beavers.

Jonah Bacon paced 10-3 Easton with 15 points, while Reid Clark had 12 and Holden Turner scored 10.
