Frederick Becker was recently named January’s Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 13, 1942, Mr. Becker enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 20, 1960, where he was trained in electronics, working as a guided missile installation electrician.
Honorably discharged from the Army on June 19, 1963, after earning the rank of Specialist 4th Class, the veteran’s military awards include the Army Good Conduct Medal and he is quick to mention he was a great shot with the rifle.
After moving to Maine and receiving his degree in electrical engineering, Becker began working at Underwood Electric in Mapleton.
A proud member of the American Legion and the VFW, Mr. Becker became a resident at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou, in July, 2006 after residing in Limestone. He likes watching Westerns, enjoys dancing, bowling, horseshoes, cooking and a number of other activities offered at the MVH. He can also be seen helping the staff in any number of ways at the Home.
“Fred is so nice to have here and he enjoys being around our veterans and our staff,” said Gail Phair-Kirk, LSW, MVH admissions coordinator. “He really helps build on the camaraderie that makes this place special and we are proud to serve him,” she added.
Mr. Becker has three children, Kevin, Keith and Tammy Mae.
