Mapleton Daze Weekend activities to continue

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

The Mapleton Lions Club announces the continuation of the Family and Friends Night, which has been the first big event of the Mapleton Daze Weekend. The Lions’ chicken barbecue will be held Friday, June 22 starting at 5 p.m. The Club has a commitment from the Mapleton United Methodist Women’s group (known as the Pie Ladies) to be present and ready to sell you the pie and coffee to go with your chicken. The Presque Isle High School FFA will be present, as well, to sell hot dogs and hamburgers. The Club is hoping other clubs and churches will join in the festivities.

Terry Sandusky, club secretary, is also announcing that the Club will continue its sponsorship of the Maple Meadow Farm Festival which has been held in conjunction with Mapleton Daze. The farm festival will run June 23-24. The Club will be cooking and selling its famous sausage sandwiches, as well cheeseburgers and hamburgers. There will be excellent desserts available made by the Gregg family.

Also on Saturday, the annual Mapleton High School reunion dinner will be held. The Club hopes the Haystack Historical Society will hold its annual pie and homemade ice cream sale. Additionally, the club is looking for organizations to put on the Saturday breakfast and evening bean dinner.

The Mapleton Lions Club is committed to working with any groups or individuals who would like to work on developing other activities for the weekend. The club will host an open meeting in the near future for all those who would like to see Mapleton Daze continue. Be watching for date, time and place of this meeting. The Club encourages all who are interested to attend.

Expression of thanks

The Castle Hill Advent Christian Church held a benefit dinner Jan. 14 for Elizabeth Richardson. Much support was shown to Elizabeth and her family through the many who attended and helped with the dinner, as well as those who sent donations. Well over 125 people were served and good conversation was enjoyed over dinner, dessert and coffee. If anyone is still interested in contributing to the support for Elizabeth, please contact Pastor Don McDaniels at 540-1225.

For the second year in a row, the group sponsored a Christmas tree raffle with all profits being donated to the Shelter. This year the tree theme was “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” and included a 5-foot tree, gift certificates donated by Mapleton Lunch, The Pizza House and Tenney’s, a Christmas CD, a 4-DVD pack of the original Christmas classics, candles, a fresh wreath, gingerbread kit, many ornaments and much more! Pam DeLong was the lucky winner. Here, Liz McHatten, left, secretary of the Mapleton Extension, presents the donation check to Heather Storey, representative of the Central Aroostook Humane Society.

The Mapleton Extension met Jan. 9 for their monthly meeting at Garden Gate Fabrics in Presque Isle. Valerie DeLong, a member of the Extension, instructed the group on making 3-D paper snowflakes, which were later delivered and donated to the Presque Isle Nursing Home for their enjoyment.

Over the past year, the Mapleton Extension has raised money and donated to the community in various ways. During Mapleton Daze, gift baskets were made up and raffle tickets were sold. All proceeds were used to help the Mapleton Lions Club add names to their Veterans’ Memorial. We also sponsored the annual Community Christmas Tree in Mapleton. Special thanks to Richard’s Tree Farm for the tree donation, Gary Brewer for setting it up in the gazebo and to the State Road Seeker’s group for decorating it.

The group continues to help give back to the community as much as possible. Being a small group of nine women, others are encouraged to join! The group meets the first Monday of each month, with the exception of July and August. For more information on times and locations of their meetings, please feel free to contact Liz McHatten at 227-8348.
