The Presque Isle Wildcat hockey team put a scare in the number-one ranked Brewer Witches on Saturday taking them to overtime before finally falling 4-3.
“The team played great,” said Presque Isle coach Carl Flynn. “It showed us we are well conditioned and can skate with Brewer. Typically Brewer wins their games in the third period. On Saturday we out shot them 11-5 in that period and had the better scoring opportunities.”
Isaac LaJoie scored twice and Cody Merrill added one goal for Presque Isle (9-6). Tyler Seeley, Connor Shaw and Joe Patenaude each had an assist for the Wildcats.
Nic Davis made 26 saves on 30 shots in goal for Presque Isle.
Presque Isle also ran into a hot goalie. Brewer’s Adam Cossette had 34 saves on 37 shots.
Even though Presque Isle didn’t win, coach Flynn said the team can gain confidence from match.
“This is a huge boost as we prepare for the playoffs,” he said.
Earlier in the week at Houlton, Lajoie scored three goals and added three assists as the Wildcats skated past Houlton/Hodgdon, 7-0. Shaw had a goal and three assists for 9-5 Presque Isle, Patenaude had a goal and 2 assists, and the other goal scorers were Merrill and Seeley.
Davis faced 17 shots in preserving the shutout.
Payton Porter made 32 saves on 39 shots for the 3-9-1 Black Hawks.
Presque Isle is currently in third place in Eastern Maine Class B hockey.
