PRESQUE ISLE’S ALEX MICHAUD (8) sets up to get a pass in Monday’s game against Old Town. The Wildcats picked up another win by defeating the Coyotes, 5-2. Presque Isle is currently third in the Eastern Maine Class B hockey standings.
The Wildcats are currently in third place in the Eastern Maine Class B Heal Point standings after two more wins this past week.
On Monday Old Town, the fifth-ranked team, traveled to the Presque Isle hoping to pull off an upset, but it wasn’t to be as PIHS won, 5-2.
The Wildcats (11-6) got on the scoreboard first at the 5:22 mark with a goal by Tyler Seeley off an assist by Alex Michaud.
Early in the second period Old Town tied the game, but from that moment on Presque Isle turned up the intensity scoring two more goals. The first was scored by Connor Shaw, who also had an assist, and one by Isaac LaJoie, who also found the back of the net in the third period.
Cody Merrill scored the other Wildcat goal.
Presque Isle’s Nic Davis had 15 saves on 17 shots.
On Saturday, also at home, the Wildcats beat Skowhegan 6-3.
Shaw had two goals and two assists to pace Presque Isle. LaJoie had a goal and two assists. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Merrill and Joseph Patenaude.
Davis had 14 saves on 17 shots.
Coach Carl Flynn said the play of Davis in the goal has improved from the start of the season, as has the entire defense.
“We aren’t trying to do anything fancy, we are just trying to play solid old-fashioned defense,” said Flynn.
He added that the defense was very young and inexperienced at the start of the season and they have worked hard to get better.
“We have momentum on our side and hopefully can carry that into the playoffs,” he said.
Presque Isle finishes up the regular season on the road with a game in Orono on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.
