Round III tonight in Presque Isle

    The schoolboy regular season has come to a close for the 2011-12 season. Several schools from around the region will be taking part in the postseason and those that have prelim games can win a trip to Bangor to compete for an Eastern Maine title.(See details on page 5A)

    Here’s a recap of games played through Friday, Feb. 10:

    Presque Isle 56, Caribou 45 — At Presque Isle Friday night, Tyler Brooks led the Wildcats past the Caribou Vikings with 16 points.

    Matt Eager had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for the 13-5 Wildcats.

    For 9-9 Caribou, Cody Herbert, Chad Caverhill, Shawn Savage and Breen Blackstone each scored eight points.

    Presque Isle and Caribou meet again tonight in the Class B preliminary round. Tipoff is 7 p.m. The Wildcats are 2-0 against the Vikings this year.

    Washburn 75, Easton 61 — At Washburn Friday night, the Beavers finished off a second straight 16-2 season by holding off the Easton Bears.

    Mitch Worcester led the Beavers with 36 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Jordan McLaughlin poured in 28 points and dished out seven assists.

    For the 14-4 Bears, Jared Hafford nailed six 3-pointers for 18 points and Jonah Bacon added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

    Both teams are in the postseason.

    Central Aroostook 79, Katahdin 47 — The Central Aroostook Panthers wrapped up the regular season with a home win over Katahdin on Thursday.

    Brendan York posted 25 points to carry the 16-2 Panthers to victory. Steven Decker scored 16 points and Mike McClung netted 12 for Central Aroostook.

    Bill Livezey paced Katahdin (13-5) with 17 points.

    Both teams are headed into the postseason.

    Van Buren 47, Ashland 32 — At Ashland Thursday, the Crusaders surged to a 26-8 halftime lead en route to the victory.

    Eric Laplante and Jordan Banks sparked Van Buren (7-11) with 14 points each and Marc Lajoie scored 12.

    Mark Chasse led Ashland (3-15) with nine points.

    Madawaska 61, Fort Fairfield 46 — At Madawaska Wednesday, Matt Deschenes scored 22 points and Ian Lee had 16 more to lead Owls past the Tigers.

    Andrew Lewis’ game-high 27 points paced 5-13 Fort Fairfield.

    The Tigers grabbed the last playoff spot and will face Central Aroostook this evening in Mars Hill at 7.p.m.

    Presque Isle 73, Fort Kent 50 — After a slow start at home on Feb. 7 the Presque Isle Wildcats found their groove and cruised to an easy win over the Fort Kent Warriors.

    “Fort Kent scored the first six points of the game,” said Wildcat coach Terry Cummings. “It was 14-all at the end of the first quarter, but we outscored them 22-4 in the second quarter as we were firing on all cylinders.”

    Eager recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats. Brooks scored a game-high 19 points for 12-5 Presque Isle and Andrew Kofstad added 17.

    Central Aroostook 64, Washburn 56 — At Mars Hill Feb. 7, Central Aroostook avenged an earlier season loss to the Washburn Beavers with a hard fought eight- point win in front a huge and vocal crowd at the Panther Palace.

    Dan Brewer and Brendan York each scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for the Panthers. Decker added 12 points, Joe Stiles 11 and McClung 10 for 15-2 Central Aroostook, which had dropped a 74-64 decision at Washburn on Jan. 28.

    Worcester scored 20 points and McLaughlin 14 for 15-2 Washburn, which had its 11-game winning streak halted.

    Caribou 57, Houlton 53 — The Caribou Vikings improved their record to 9-8 Feb. 7 with a four- point win over the Houlton Shiretowners.

    Caribou outscored Houlton 21-8 in the third quarter to erase a seven-point halftime deficit, and held on for the victory.

    Matt Milliard scored 10 of his game-high 16 in the fourth quarter to lead a balanced attack for Caribou. Dayne Savage had 12, senior Caverhill had 11 and Herbert chipped in with 10.
