Community congratulates Lady Beavers

WASHBURN NEWS

A big congratulations go out to the Lady Beavers for bringing home the Eastern Maine Class D Basketball trophy for the second year in a row. Great job, ladies!

Rotary Club

Recently the Washburn Rotary Club was pleased to welcome speakers from the Presque Isle Rotary Club and TAMC. Sylvia Getman, president and CEO of TAMC, spoke on the hospital’s history, noting that this is their centennial year. Andy Soucier added information about the various locations of the hospital over the past 100 years, noting that noise from the fire station next to TAMC, then located on Second Street, led to its moving to Academy Street. Another item of interest per Getman was that TAMC was the first hospital in Maine to have a cobalt machine for cancer radiation therapy. She concluded by stating that current goals/challenges of the hospital included balancing cost, quality and service.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, Scouts and leaders attended the Washburn Cub Scout Pack 162 Blue and Gold Banquet. The troop welcomed two new members during the graduation Arrow of Light ceremony, Carver Pendexter and Alex Hyde. Members of Troop 177 welcomed the two with their Scout handbook, neckerchief and slide, as well as patrol patch. Following the ceremony, Troop 177 conducted a Court of Honor, handing out advancement to its members.

The annual North Star District Winterama was held at Aroostook State Park on Feb. 18 and 19 with Washburn’s Troop 177 sleeping out in their snow domes and cooking their winter high-energy meals in their snow kitchen. The boys completed events on the Klondike Trail and placed well in several events. Planning has begun for the Patriots Day weekend trip to the Sea Dogs’ baseball game in Portland; this is sure to be great experience for those attending.
