Yard sale fundraiser to benefit local family

by Tomi Henderson

The Bridgewater Recreation Department is going to do a yard sale fundraiser for Ralph Kinney April 19, 20 and 21 at the Community Building. Volunteers are being sought to help run the yard sale on Saturday, April 21.

Organizers are also looking for donations of yard sale-type items, especially lots of kid-type items, including: toys your children no longer play with, clothes that they have outgrown, as well as any other household item that you would like to donate.

Donations can be dropped off at the Community Building on the following dates and times: April 11 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.; April 12, 2:30  to 4:30 or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; April 17 from 1-3 p.m.; and April 19 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. If these times do not work for you, please give Christine a call — cell 521-4510 or home 425-6606 — or send her an e-mail at christine.finemore@maine.edu to arrange a time that will work for you.

Bridgewater Historical Association

For the past several years the Bridgewater Historical Association’s Hall opened for the year with the Bridgewater pageants. However, thanks to the generosity of the Smyrna/Merrill Historic Society, this year the BHA Hall will open with a play. It is the first joint project and association officials hope it is a successful one. After presenting their play, “Hood of Sherwood” at their hall on April 27 and 28, the SMHS will bring it up to the BHA Hall on May 4 and 5. All shows begin at 6 p.m. In Bridgewater, dessert will be served at intermission.

Tickets for the play in Bridgewater are on a donation basis and are available at the Bridgewater Town Office or by calling 425-7901 or 429-8268. Seating is limited so get your tickets early. Advance ticket sales are also necessary to let us know how much dessert to prepare. Proceeds will benefit both the BHA and SMHS.

The Bridgewater Rec Department will be holding the pageants at the BHA Hall on their usual schedule, the day before Mother’s Day, April 12.

The BHA is still seeking nominees for the Boston Cane. Nomination forms are available at the Town Office. We would like to name a new recipient so please make your nominations soon.

“Outside In” will begin Thursday Night Music events shortly after the pageants. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates. Association members are looking forward to seeing you at these and other events at the hall. Thank you for your support.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, April 3, at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Scott Carlin, owner of the Mars Hill IGA as well as Star City IGA in Presque Isle and Hillside IGA in Fort Fairfield. He currently employs 130 individuals in the three stores.

Scott spoke about receiving the IGA Brand Development Award recently, as well as being named a finalist in the IGA International Retailer of the Year contest.

He told of the updates that have been made to the Fort and Presque Isle stores, and the planned updates for the Mars Hill store, which is the newest building at 19 years old. There will be new cases and shelving, which will allow them to feature more varieties and items for their customers. There will also be more frozen products available.

Hockey champion

Mikayla McLaughlin, granddaughter of Bud and Gwenn Porter of Mapleton and R.H. and Lorraine McLaughlin of Fort Fairfield, is a national champion. Mikayla is a member of the girls 16U Connecticut Polar Bears that represented New England in the USA Tier 2 Girls Hockey National Championship tournament in Frisco, Texas, from March 27-April 1. The team had five wins and one loss overall. The 16U Polar Bears are not new to this level of hockey as Mikayla’s sister, Katie, was on the team in 2011 and they also won the championship in Anaheim, Calif. Congratulations to these grandparents as they have two national championship hockey granddaughters.
