Beavers hold meeting

WASHBURN NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

Members of the Washburn Beavers ATV Club had a very good turnout at their first meeting of the season, with 26 members attending. The meeting was held at the Washburn Trail Runners’ clubhouse. The club would like to take a second and thank the snowmobile club for letting them borrow their facility.

The night started with a huge potluck supper that filled two tables! A meeting followed, starting with the election of officers. Elected officers include: President Roger Hewitt Jr., Vice President Larry Bull, Treasurer Joyce Boynton, Secretary Charlene Sharp, Trail Master Donnie Hewitt and Assistant Trail Master Alan Carter.

Members discussed how the Rest-A-Bit project was coming along and what was still needed for the rebuild, due to the vandalism of the area last August. Rebuilding will begin as soon as the club is able to get out to the area without damaging the trail.

Also discussed was this season’s plans for trail work and summer events. As of now, all trails are still closed until May 15.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 2, at the Washburn Trail Runners’ clubhouse. A potluck will start at 6 p.m., with the meeting to follow at 6:30. All are welcome to attend. The club applications have been attached inside the ATV trail maps which have been placed around the area. Maps can be picked up at: White’s Service, Washburn Food Mart, Perham Post Office and at the Town offices of Washburn, Wade and Perham. Club application can also be printed off the website. Read Across Aroostook

“Stop! Drop! Read!” This is the message on a flyer put out by Aroostook Right to Read. On  April 11 from 1-1:30 in the afternoon, everyone in both Washburn schools followed this message. Everywhere you looked, you found students, teachers and administrators reading. What a powerful message!

August Festival 2012 plans

The Washburn August Festival Committee is very pleased to announce that the Washburn Fire Department is hosting the 2012 annual Aroostook County Fire Chiefs’ Association Firemen’s Muster in conjunction with the annual Washburn August Festival celebration. All member departments from Aroostook County and Western New Brunswick will be converging in Washburn to participate in the parade, antique fire truck display, as well as their own muster events during Saturday’s activities.

The August Festival Committee once again would like to provide such events as outdoor concerts and entertainment at the park, children’s activities and games, fireworks and so much more. Organizers would like to make the 32nd annual Washburn August Festival as big as it has been in years. The Festival dates of Aug. 17-19 are going to again be filled with many exciting and enjoyable festivities.

The committee is also reaching out to the public and are in need of volunteers to help out and organize various events. One main and very important event is the parade. They are desperately looking for individuals or an organization that would like to organize the parade held during the festival.

If your group or Civic Organization would like to partake in the Festival, the following contact information is as follows: Cindy Boot, chairman, at 455-8464 or e-mail her at cindyboot@live.com if you are interested in participating in the wonderful parade; Paul Carter at 455-4714 if you are interested in participating in the arts and crafts during the Festival; or Dennis Harris at 455-8279 or e-mail drharris02@juno.com if you are interested in being a food vendor at the Festival.
