Baseball, softball sums: Local teams play a few games despite weather

    Katahdin teams pick up two wins
    On Monday, the Katahdin Cougars picked up an 11-3 win over visiting Schenck.
    Jesse McNally paced the Cougars with a home run, two singles and three RBIs, while Billy Livezey and Caine Patterson each belted two singles.
    The Cougars held a 7-4 lead after four and added four more runs over the next two innings.
    On the girls’ side, Katahdin defeated the Schenck Lady Wolverines, 11-8, as Megan Merry and Ashley Randall each singled twice and doubled. Lizzie Knowles collected three singles and Bailey McNally chipped in with a pair of singles.

    The Lady Cougars scored in each inning, leading 7-4 after four innings of play.
    Last Saturday in Howland, the Cougars used eight innings to declare a 7-6 win over host Penobscot Valley High School in Howland.
    Sal Cloukey led Katahdin’s offense with a triple and a single, while scoring twice. Matt Birmingham had two singles behind relief winner McNally.
    The Howlers led 5-3 over four innings and 6-5 after six. The Cougars tied the game in the seventh and drove in a run in the eighth for the win.
    In girls’ action, the Lady Cougars were blanked 13-0, as PVHS’ Kayla Dube threw a five-inning, one-hitter, striking out 13. Makayla Patterson reached Dube for a single.
Southern Aroostook boys win two, girls drop contests
    Visiting Southern Aroostook used a 10-run fifth inning to break open a close game against Limestone/MSSM on Monday, as the Warriors earned with a 13-2 victory.
    The Warriors led 3-1 after three innings before they erupted in the fifth. Dylan Porter of the Warriors hit a three-run double to spark the inning. Pat Goodall roped a two-run double, while Parker Walker and Vance Gustin each hit a two-run single.
    In girls’ action, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors were overtaken 29-15 in Limestone on Monday.
    Kaitlyn Sommers led SACS with two doubles and a single for three RBIs, while Katie Goodall stroked a pair of singles.
    Last Thursday in Dyer Brook, Katahdin overtook Southern Aroostook, 9-7, behind McNally’s four singles and two RBIs.
    Katahdin’s Randall picked up the win, striking out five. Merry doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs, while Patterson added three singles.

    For Southern Aroostook, Sable Altvater hit her first career home run in the seventh inning and added a run-scoring single. Goodall collected a pair of singles.
    The Lady Cougars led 2-0, as each team scored three runs in the fifth for a 5-3 Katahdin advantage. The Lady Cougars added three more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
    Southern Aroostook tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs.
    In baseball action, the Warrior boys overpowered visiting Katahdin, 18-3.
    Porter and Trent Cullinan each singled twice for Southern Aroostook.
    Livezey also had two singles for Katahdin.
Shiretowners lose opener
    In their season opener last Wednesday, the Houlton Shiretowners fell to host Presque Isle, 5-1.
    Three Presque Isle pitchers — Ryley Norton, Saul Nunez and Wilder York — combined for a three-hitter.
    Leading Houlton from the plate was Isaiah Straubel, who doubled.
Hodgdon teams both win
    On Monday, the Hodgdon Hawks overtook host Fort Fairfield, 9-4.
    Nick Lunn reached base safely each at bat, going 2-3, with a pair of singles and an RBI. Tyler Sherman, Matt Harmon, David Donahue and Chris Wallace all singled. Erik Ryan, Harmon and Donahue each drove in a run.
    Working on the mound, Lunn, Sherman and Wallace combined for 12 strikeouts.
    The Hawks are now 3-1 and will host Katahdin on Thursday at 4 p.m. will play a makeup game this Friday in Dyer Brook against Southern Aroostook at 3:30 p.m.
    At Hodgdon, the Hawks broke out in the third inning for 10 runs to pick up a 14-5 win over visiting GHCA.

    Sherman led Hodgdon with two doubles, while driving in four runs. Donahue doubled and singled for two RBIs, while Ryan singled and knocked in a pair of runs. Tristan Larson singled and drove in a run for Hodgdon.
    For GHCA, Russell Socoby belted an RBI-double.
    On Monday Hodgdon edged host Fort Fairfield, 6-5, as the Lady Hawks came back with two runs in the seventh inning.
    Fort Fairfield led 4-3 after three innings before Hodgdon knotted the game in the fourth. Fort Fairfield answered with a run in the sixth, but Hodgdon responded with the tying and winning run in the seventh.
    Kim Levesque led Hodgdon with two singles, while Danaka Welton doubled.
East Grand girls overtake Eagles
    The East Grand Lady Vikings scored early to take a 12-2 win over host Limestone/MSSM last Wednesday.
    The Lady Vikes scored nine runs in the first two innings of the game.
    Elisha Farley singled twice and brought in a run, while Chelsea Winarski also hit two singles. Kaitlyn Beaudoin threw a four-hitter, striking out 10.
Houlton girls overpowered
    Last Wednesday in Presque Isle, the Wildcats scored 12 second-inning runs to overtake visiting Houlton, 20-5.
    Megan Hannigan led Houlton with a home run blast in the first inning.
    Results from Houlton’s games with Mattanawcook Academy on Monday were not available at press time.
