The Wildcat boys tennis team saw its season come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern Maine Class B playoffs.

The eighth-seeded ’Cats were blanked by the No. 1 Ellsworth Eagles Thursday, 5-0, in Ellsworth.

Connor Shaw and Osman Castro were both unable to win a game in singles play against the Eagles’ Tyler Small and Dillon Toothaker. In third singles, Liam Hughes fell to Tyler Beardsley, 6-1, 6-2.

The PI doubles combination of Mike Michaud and Chris Carroll claimed a first-set win, but then dropped the next two to Diego Cox and Caleb Mora. The final score was 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.

In second doubles, Ellsworth’s Brandon Albee and Dustin Murphy stopped Presque Isle’s Drew Barrett and Freeman Short, 6-4, 6-1.

Presque Isle was able to win its preliminary round match against Belfast at home last Tuesday, 3-2.

The PI girls were defeated by sixth-ranked Hermon in a prelim match held last Wednesday in Hermon, 3-2. The 11th-seeded Wildcats made a strong attempt at pulling off the upset, but came up just short.

Presque Isle won both of its doubles matches. Sara Gilson and Hilary Boucher bested the Hawks’ Nicole and Brittany Overlock, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. Also, Jenna Hallett and Chelsea Carroll got past Kaitlyn Reynolds and Paige Bacon, 6-3, 6-3.

Wildcats Dani Wolland, Kayla Girardin and Melissa Carson were all defeated in straight sets in singles competition.
