Easton FFA goes to state convention

by Debbie Smith

The Easton FFA chapter members recently competed at the FFA State Convention that took place at the University of Maine Orono campus.

Kevin Marquis, chapter advisor, FFA chapter members and chaperone Kim Hammond left after school on May 16 and returned home on May 18. The members who attended the State Convention were: Stephanie Hammond, Garrett Gray, Logan Sutherland, Harvey Brown, Carl Mullen and Cody Embelton.

Several ribbons were awarded individually to the FFA students in areas they competed in. Stephanie Hammond placed sixth individually for Extemporary Speaking. Logan Sutherland placed fifth individually for Ag Mechanics and then placed sixth individually for Ag Sales. Cody Embelton placed sixth overall for Creed Speaking. Garrett Gray placed second individually for welding and also won himself a grinder donated by Matheson Valley Gas. Carl Mullen was on the nominating committee to help bring a new slate of state officers.

The Easton FFA chapter had two teams ready to compete in the Ag Mechanics and Ag Sales competition. For the Ag Sales competition the members had to take a written test, go through a job interview and then present what they were selling individually. For the Ag Mechanics competition they had to get a small engine to run, take a written test, individually put together an electrical box that showed the outlet, light switch and light bulb, and then they had to weld individually.

The team for Ag Mechanics consisted of Stephanie Hammond, Garrett Gray, Logan Sutherland and Harvey Brown. The Ag Mechanics team placed second in the competition and each member of the team received a $6,000 scholarship to UNO in Ohio upon graduation.

The Easton chapter members had a great time and were able to meet up with some other FFA chapters. Upon arrival to the State Convention, participants ate at the Texas Roadhouse, then checked into their hotel. The convention competitions began bright and early Thursday morning and the day ended with midnight bowling. On Friday, the competition continued and then the day ended with awards and a new slate of state officers.
