On Thursday, Limestone-MSSM took on Fort Fairfield in an Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal softball game and even though the game was close in the middle innings, the Eagles put together a seven-run rally in the fifth for a 15-3 victory in a game called due to the 12-run rule.
LOW THROW — Fort Fairfield second baseman Cassidy Godin scoops up a throw from catcher Rebecka Pelkey, while Limestone-MSSM’s Jordyn Hopkins slides safely into the base during Thursday’s game, won by the Eagles, 15-3.
Ahead 8-5, the hosts sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth. The game was clinched when Allen came up with the bases loaded and singled to right field. The ball got past the right fielder, so the bases were cleared and Allen eventually came across for the game-clinching run.
“It was one of our most complete games,” O’Neal said. “Our defense was good and Amanda was efficient on the mound, but it was really about our sticks.”
The Limestone-MSSM offense erupted for 18 hits and six different players had multiple-hit game. Melissa Cantafio led the way with a two-run homer and two other hits.
The Tigers trailed 2-0, but tied the game in the third when Cassidy Godin walked, Emily Blaisdell singled and both scored on RBIs by Alyssa Dougherty and Sydney Churchill.
After Limestone-MSSM had taken a 4-2 lead, the Tigers answered in the third when Jordann Coiley singled and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Rebecka Pelkey.
The Eagles then scored four times in the fourth before securing the win with the big fifth inning.
Coiley walked only three batters in a solid effort on the mound for Fort. Five different players had hits for the Tigers, who had beaten Ashland 17-5 in a prelim contest held last Tuesday.
In that game, the Tigers scored nine times in the third and Coiley blanked the Hornets over the first five innings for the triumph.
Pelkey connected for a pair of doubles and finished with four RBI to lead Fort Fairfield at the plate.
Blaisdell and Camille Huffman both had two hits. The Tigers also took advantage of seven errors committed by the Ashland defense.
Adrianna Paradis hit a two-run homer run and Brooke LaBelle singled twice and added two RBI for the Hornets, whose season ended with a 6-8 record as the No. 7 seed in the division.
The two teams had split their regular season matchups.
