EASTON — A Mars Hill woman was listed in serious but stable condition at presstime at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to her father, following a car-moose accident in Easton on July 6.

“At approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 6 the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a motor vehicle accident with injuries on the Bangor Road in Easton. A 2002 Ford Mustang, operated by Yolanda Smith, 23, of Mars Hill, was traveling south on Route 1A when she struck a bull moose that had entered the roadway,” said Sgt. Forrest Dudley, ACSO.

According to Dudley, Smith continued to travel approximately a quarter mile before driving into a deep ditch.

“Smith received head trauma and lacerations from the accident. She was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Easton Fire Department and transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. She was later flown to Bangor by Aroostook Critical Care Air Transport, in critical condition,” said Dudley.

Deputy Ross McQuade is the primary investigator. McQuade was assisted at the scene by other deputies with the ACSO and the U.S. Border Patrol. The Mustang was considered a total loss. The moose died as the result of the accident.
