LaBelle, LaJoie gain scholarships

    The Northern Region of Maine Sports Legends selected their Scholar/Athletes for 2012 and Brooke LaBelle of Ashland and Isaac LaJoie of Presque Isle will receive $500 scholarships at the annual banquet at the Alfond Girls and Boys Club in Waterville Oct. 7.

Brooke LaBelle    LaBelle graduated from Ashland District High School and ranked first in her class of 25.

 

    As an athlete, she participated all four years in varsity soccer, making the All-Eastern Maine team and receiving the Butch Shaw Memorial Award. She was the team captain her junior and senior years.

    She also participated in varsity basketball and varsity softball for four seasons. In softball, LaBelle was a member of the All-Aroostook Team. She was a member of the student council and student government, was president of National Honor Society her senior year and earned the Maine Principal Association Principal’s Award for her school. LaBelle participated in theater, served on Phi Beta Kappa and participated in chorus and band and was named All-Aroostook in both. She was also named the school’s Outstanding Musician. 

    She received high honors all four years and was the recipient of the United States Achievement Academy National Award.

    In the community, LaBelle has volunteered with coaching at the recreation department in her home town. She has also volunteered with the Ashland Fire Department, the Presque Isle Animal Shelter and American Red Cross blood drives. She was a leader on an Allagash Wilderness Waterway trip, participated in Ashland area Parent Teacher Organization events, served as a teacher’s aide in English class and elementary art classes and was a committee member on Ashland’s Project Graduation.

    LaBelle will attend Husson University in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Isaac LaJoie    LaJoie graduated from Presque Isle High School and ranked first in his class of 135.

    For athletics, LaJoie participated all four years in varsity soccer, where he was named to the Penobscot Valley Conference all-conference team and and served as captain his senior year.

    He also participated all four years in varsity hockey and was named an Eastern Maine Class B All Star first team forward. He joined the school’s 100-Point Club and was a captain his senior season.

    In varsity baseball, he was also a four-year team member and received the Aaron Archer Award for being an outstanding baseball team member. Again, he was team captain as a senior.

    LaJoie was a member of the National Honor Society, serving as president his senior year. He also participated in student council, band, Gifted and Talented and the Presque Isle High School Varsity Club.

    He received high honors all four years and earned the certificate of Outstanding Academic Achievement.  He was the Maine Principal Association Principal’s Award recipient for his school and won the Bausch and Lamb Science Award for promise in the field of science.

    For community service, he was a mentor for soccer and baseball for the Presque Isle Recreation Department and Presque Isle Youth Hockey Association. He did trail clean-up at the Nordic Heritage Center and volunteered at American Red Cross blood drives, Martha and Mary’s Soup Kitchen, the Peer Tutoring Program, Special Olympics and the SAD 1 Educational School Farm.

    LaJoie will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received early acceptance.
