FIRST RESPONDERS were quick to remove drivers from a pickup and car that hit head-on on the Fort Road in Presque Isle Monday. The crash occurred when Dora Pelkey, in the sedan, attempted to make a left turn onto State Street Extension in front of Elizabeth Lilley’s pickup. The woman were taken to TAMC with non-life-threatening injuries. Their vehicles were deemed totaled.  FS-PIPDFortRdAcct-c-sh-30

“On July 23, at approximately 9:16 a.m., officers from the Presque Isle Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on the Fort Road (Route 163). Dora Pelkey, 49, of New Brunswick, was traveling west on the Fort Road and was attempting to make a left turn onto State Street Extension when the accident occurred,” said Officer Lynn Hartley, lead investigator for the PIPD.

“Presque Isle resident Elizabeth Lilley, 49, was heading east on the Fort Road when Pelkey crossed into her lane to make the left turn. Both drivers attempted to swerve out of the way of each other but struck head-on,” continued Hartley.

Pelkey and Lilley were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and airbags were deployed.

“Lilley was able to get out of her 2005 Ford Explorer truck. The Presque Isle Fire Department had to extricate Pelkey from her vehicle, a 2003 Buick Century,” said Hartley.

Both drivers were transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Lilley was treated for chest and side pain. She was later released. Pelkey suffered a dislocated right arm and a broken left wrist. Pelkey was admitted to TAMC, where she received surgery for her wrist,” said Hartley.

Assisting Hartley at the scene was Sgt. Eric Erickson, who maintained the flow of traffic around the accident. Both vehicles are considered a total loss.
