PRESQUE ISLE — Officials at Wintergreen Arts Center will host a special night of literature on Friday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. as the Presque Isle Writers’ Group presents original works, including essays, memoirs, fiction and poetry!

“This is a wonderful First Friday event sure to entertain and inspire,” notes Wendy Gilman-Zubrick, Wintergreen’s director.

The Writers’ Group consists of local writers from Presque Isle and surrounding areas. The group meets  weekly on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. at the Presque Isle Congregational Church to read new work aloud to each other and share in the creative process.

“While the current group is small, consisting of just nine or so members, there is no shortage on talent. Members include well-known local favorites such as Dan Ladner and our very own ‘Old Maine Woman,’ Glenna Johnson Smith, and features a few up-and-comers sure to make an impression, such as Shawn Cote and Melissa Jenks,” she said.

Jenks recently got news that one of her short stories will be published in “Echoes” magazine, entitled “A Dream Come True.”

“Other talented members include group founder Martie Pritchard, Barb Ladner, Mary Warren, Mary Niles and Dennis Curley,” she said.

“A retired school teacher and writer, Pritchard will be reading excerpts from her new children’s book, ‘10 Things to Know About a Crow (before you make it a pet),’” said Gilman-Zubrick.

Pritchard will also share excerpts from “Birdseed Boobs,” the story of her mother’s unique response after facing a double mastectomy.

Readings will take place 6-8 p.m., with a brief author meet-and-greet from 6:45-7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. All are welcome and light refreshments will be available.

“To make a fabulous evening just that much more exciting, the flatworks exhibit, by local artist Tim Gagnon of Gagnon Studio in Castle Hill, has been extended through mid-August,” said Gilman-Zubrick.
