Island Falls 5K slated Saturday
“It hardly seems possible that the Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run/4K walk has been going for 20 years,” race director/organizer John Walker said. “People come from everywhere to compete in this race. A race that has been dubbed the ‘Pie Run,’ due to the fact that in lieu of ribbons/trophies, winners receive their choice of delicious homemade pies/desserts.”
The Saturday, Aug. 4 race starts at 9 a.m. for both runners and walkers. Prior to that (at 8:45 a.m.) is a fun run of a half mile for those age 9 and under. In addition to prizes in all age categories, even over age 70, there are more than $1,000 in door prizes from generous local businesses from the southern Aroostook area.
The first 100 participants will receive a special 20th anniversary Island Falls Summerfest T-shirt. Registration may be made in advance ($12) or the day of the race ($15). To enter the race, e-mail Walker at jswalkerinc@gmail.com for a race form or stop by the town office in Island Falls and pick one up for pre-registertration. Net proceeds from the race are split equally between the Agape Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
For those who have not participated in the “Pie Run”, take exit 276 off I-95 and go through town driving to the Island Falls Municipal Building. Please try to arrive by 8:30 a.m.. There is a water station at the half-way point plus refreshments after the race.
