UMPI’s Grylka places first at Unity

Unity hosts XC meet

    Kayla Legassie of Presque Isle ran to a third-place finish in 21 minutes and 37 seconds on the 2.9-mile course to lead the Owls to victory at a cross country meet held at Unity College Saturday.

    The Owls scored 27 points to outdistance the host Rams, UM-Machias and Maine Maritime Academy. Nicole Green of Caribou was fifth in 21:57 and Katie Christoffel of Clifton Park, N.Y. sixth in 21:59 for UMPI.

    The Owl men placed second only to the Colby College B team in their event. The Owls scored 61 points, which trailed Colby B (23) but was better than MMA (68), Unity (78) and UM-Machias (95).

    UMPI’s Thomas Grylka of Hampton, Conn. was the race winner in 27:59 on the 4.7-mile course. Philip Boody of Stockholm (13th, 31:47) and Garrett Hilton of Charleston (19th, 33:11) also cracked the top 20 overall.

    “Thomas’s opening loop had him close to the front, from which point he continued on to take the lead and extend it through to a very strong finishing kick,” said Owl coach Christopher Smith.

SUNY-Canton too much for Owl men’s soccer team

    The SUNY-Canton Roos defeated UMPI Saturday, 3-1, with a dominating performance. The Roos oushot the Owls in the first half, 13-1, and 20-4 in the contest.

    The lone goal for UMPI was scored by Kobe Ashkir, a sophomore from Portland, in the 83rd minute after the team was already down, 3-0.

    Joshua MacKinnon, a junior from Linsmore, Nova Scotia, made 11 saves in goal for the Owls, who dropped to 4-2 with the defeat.

UMPI women lose pair

    The UM-Presque Isle women’s soccer team lost 6-1 to SUNY-Canton Saturday after falling to UM-Machias at home Thursday, 7-1.

    Kallie Pelletier, a sophomore from Madawaska, scored the Lady Owls’ lone goal in the road loss to the Roos.

    Against the Clippers, Chelsea Beauchemin, a sophomore from Adams, assisted Lainey Herring, a senior from Houlton, for her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign.

    Amanda Larrabee, a freshman from Jackson, was the goalkeeper in both games for UMPI. She had 17 saves against the Roos and five saves against the Clippers. The Owls’ usual starter, Taylor Ussery, missed the contests due to an injury.

UMPI golf team places 7th in state championships

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle golf team had a two-day total of 657 to place seventh out of 10 teams at the Maine Intercollegiate Golf Championships, held at Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland.

    Reynold Brown was fifth among No. 1 golfers with a score of 157, while Mike Balmer was tied for fifth among No. 2s with a 159.

    Anthony Batchelder shot a 169, placing him in a tie for fourth among No. 5 golfers.

Volleyball team drops two in Massachusetts

    The youthful University of Maine at Presque Isle volleyball team is still looking for its first win of the season after dropping matches to Pine Manor College, 3-1, and New Rochelle, 3-0, in Massachusetts Saturday.

    The 0-5 Owls next play at the University of Southern Maine Oct. 2.

    Against Pine Manor, UMPI won the opening set, 25-11, before losing the next three. Randi Kaplan, a sophomore from Embden, had 15 digs and Elizabeth Kofstad, a sophomore from Presque Isle, had six kills.

    The Blue Angels of New Rochelle used 20 service aces in its victory. Kaplan had 10 digs and four service aces and Alison MacDonald, a senior from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, had five assists.
