Approximately 600 runners took part in the annual Pop Crowell Invitational Cross Country Meet, held Saturday at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. Thomas Grylka, a freshman from Easton Hampton, Conn., placed 88th out of 280 competitors in the eight-kilometer men’s race to lead the University of Maine at Presque Isle squad. Grylka’s time was 29 minutes and 9 seconds.

Philip Boody, a junior from New Sweden, was 169th in 31:16, followed by Garrett Hilton, a freshman from Charleston (194th, 32:10) and Corey Hebert, a freshman from Baldwin (196th, 32:15). Tyler Hilton, a freshman from Charleston, was 216th in 33:12 and Aiden Bothwell, a freshman from Penobscot, placed 253rd in 37:45.

“I saw good things in Hebert and the Hiltons,” said UMPI coach Christopher Smith. “They are a tight three who are able to key off each other in training to bring their times down and to move the team up in meet results.”

On the women’s side, only two Owl runners competed. Kayla Legassie, a sophomore from Presque Isle, placed 59th out of 316 participants. She had a time of 20:25. Her teammate, sophomore Emily Wright of Mapleton, took the 193rd position with a 22:45 clocking.

“With most of our runners having school commitments and scheduled days off, Legassie and Wright posted their best times of the year,” Smith said. “When you consider that Carly Langley, Kati Christoffel and Nicole Green will fit right in with these two, our team promises to be very strong as we build toward the state championship meet in two weeks.”

Grylka was named USCAA co-runner of the week for the week ending Sept. 23. The honor came on the heels of his victory in a meet held at Unity College Sept. 22.

Next week, the Owl harriers will travel to compete in the St. Joseph’s College Runnin’ Monks Invitational in Standish.

Owls defeat Fisher, lose to NHTI

The UMPI men’s soccer team defeated a shorthanded Fisher College team Saturday, 6-0, in a match played on Fisher’s home field in Medford, Mass.

The Owls took advantage of a Fisher squad that suited up only nine players, as Kyle Corrigan, a senior from Caribou, led the offense by scoring three goals. Kobe Ashkir, a sophomore from Portland, opened the scoring by converting an assist from Chad Caverhill, a freshman from Caribou, at the 40:45 mark of the first half. Caverhill added another assist and also scored his team’s final two goals of the contest.

Josh MacKinnon, a junior from Linsmore, Nova Scotia, recorded the shutout by turning away both shots he faced.

UMPI had lost three consecutive matches entering the Fisher game.

On Sunday, New Hampshire Technical Institute handed the Owls a 3-0 loss. UMPI takes on Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor Saturday and then takes on Maine Maritime Academy Sunday. The team is now 5-6 on the campaign

UMPI women garner third and fourth wins

Lainey Herring, a senior from Houlton, tallied six goals Saturday as the Lady Owls trounced Fisher College, 10-2.

UMPI moved to 3-6 with the victory. Fisher actually took a 1-0 lead before the Owls scored the match’s next 10 goals. Chelsea Beauchemin, a sophomore from Adams, scored off a pass from Kallie Pelletier, a sophomore from Madawaska, to knot the score. Herring then went on her tear, putting her season goal total at 14, with Pelletier also scoring for the victors.

On Sunday, Herring set up Pelletier for the only goal of the match in the 98th minute as UMPI blanked New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, N.H.

“The team, as a collective, is starting to really come together,” said Owl coach Trevor Parent. “We have always had the talent, and now it is about applying that talent to the games within our system of play. We are still looking to get a couple of our injuries issues behind us, but this is a special group.”

The team resumes its schedule Sunday, Oct. 7 with a match against Maine Maritime Academy.

Golf team falls by two strokes at Maine Maritime

The two Owl golfers shared low-round honors in the 22-player event, which saw Maine Maritime Academy win by two strokes.

Mike Balmer, a senior from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Eric Brown, a sophomore from Caribou, both carded 85s for UMPI, which finished ahead of UM-Machias.
