FFA members take field trip
EASTON NEWS
by Debbie Smith
Wednesday, Oct. 12, seven members of the Easton FFA chapter, along with their advisor, Kevin Marquis, left Easton to tour agricultural sites around Maine.
Brandon Hossford, Zach Lamoreau and Cody Embelton mix up a batch of cheese at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. Members of Easton’s FFA chapter recently traveled downstate, touring several facilities over a four-day period.
Logan Sutherland and Carter Mazzerole try their hand at making cheese during a recent FFA trip to a farm in New Gloucester.
The group consisted of: Carter Mazzerole, Brandon Hossford, Cody Embelton, Zach Lamoreau, Riley Mazzerole, Harvey Brown V and Logan Sutherland.
The group started their tour on Thursday morning at Stonyvale Farms in Exeter. Here they toured a facility that generates electricity from the manure produced by over 800 cows that are being milked at the farm. This anaerobic digester draws methane from the mixture of manure and food waste and the methane powers a generator that produces enough electricity to power over 900 homes. The group also toured the dairy farm which produces over 50,000 pounds of milk daily.
On Thursday afternoon, the group toured the advanced manufacturing lab and the composites lab at the University of Orono. Here the group saw blast-proof materials that are being used by our soldiers in the Middle East. They also got to see prototypes of the bases that will be used for offshore windmills as well as the equipment that is being used to test windmill blades.
Friday morning the FFA members traveled to New Gloucester to tour Pineland Farms. While at Pineland the group toured the farm buildings, cheese-making facility and even got to make cheese. The group spent a couple of hours in the Portland area before traveling to Ellsworth.
Saturday morning the group traveled to New Harbor to visit with Elliot Coleman at Four Seasons Farm. This facility runs greenhouses year-round. The interesting thing about the farm is that their greenhouses are unheated in the winter. The farm also has developed many new methods of conservation farming.
The group traveled from New Harbor to Bucksport to visit the observation tower at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. Unfortunately, the observation tower was closed. Participants then went to the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor where they got a look at the many displays housed there and watched a video that talked about Easton.
The FFA members then returned home to Easton. In all they traveled over 800 miles.

Enjoying the ride were: Marie Hewitt, Helen Cleaves, Eleanor Kennison, Clair and Eldora Carter, Loomis and Kitty Scott, Elizabeth Martin, Electra Blodgett, Hollis Hull, Barbara Bonville, Anette Copeland, Gerald and Vera Shaw, Ed and Alta Rattray, Diane Hersey, Janice Adams, Arlene Ladner, Ida Doak, Ezalee Smith, Hughie Gray, Arthur Lamoreau, Betty Brown, Geraldine Flewelling, Liana Demerchant, Kay Rhodes, Jean Ann Ames, John and Nina Trask, Mrs. George Leach, Carol Adams, and bus driver Dellas Adams.
